Select Board Backs Smith Voc Governance Study
Southampton's Select Board backed a push for voting representation at Smith Vocational Agricultural High School.
Select Board · Meeting of October 13, 2026
Southampton's Select Board backed a push for voting representation at Smith Vocational Agricultural High School. Board Chair Jon Lumbra's five-part motion, approved unanimously, authorized him to explore a regional governance structure after officials learned a possible $50 million replacement of the school's aging Building D could trigger a capital assessment of roughly $1,200 per student, or about $57,600 annually for Southampton's 48 enrolled students, with no local vote. The town currently pays about $27,000 per student in tuition with zero transportation reimbursement.
Separately, the board heard that senior center mold testing came back "negative for pretty much everything," though a 15-year-old proprietary HVAC control system remains unresolved. The board also unanimously approved a cannabis host-community-agreement equity policy, a Weights and Measures service agreement, and amended driveway regulations.
